ideal "scholarly" image

This pressure to succeed and fear of failure is a mental fabrication, a non-existent idea of the perfect student, just like the ideal body image. It does not exist, there is always something lacking, something to improve, when the simple reality is, it does not exist; however, we develop this notion of an ideal “scholarly image.” Achieving the ideal “scholarly image” will ensure entry into any graduate school or any job position.

knowledge as a drug

I transferred to UCLA in Fall 2007. Majoring in Sociology, I was required to complete Sociology 101: Development of Sociological Theory and Sociology 102: Contemporary Sociological Theory. Throughout each quarter I read the eminent works of Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Michael Foucault, Max Weber, and Frederick Nietzsche. After the first two weeks of reading, I became hooked. Learning about theory became my drug, I couldn’t stop reading; however, the more concepts I digested, the more I began questioning the metaphysical aspects of life, religion, ethics, and institutions.

Feeling Helpless to Help

As many college students will tell you, much, if not most, of one’s “education” takes place outside the classroom. Personally, I have found the lessons from my life as a relational being to be the most essential and transforming. Regardless of your background, your life is going to be full of events that you cannot anticipate and may feel ill-equipped to handle.

Technology’s Power to Connect and Isolate Us

Right about the time I was getting ready to head off to college, Facebook was about to take off and steadily carve its way into the lives of college students across the globe. I consider myself to be part of the first generation of Facebook, back in the day when Facebook was exclusively for college students, and even then, it was only set up for a small number of universities. This was a time when profiles consisted of a picture and basic demographic and contact information.

Facebook vs. Face time

Facebook, what a great invention! An online social networking site that let’s you keep up with friends and classmates without actually talking to them in person. It comes in handy when you don’t actually have the time or energy to leave the comfort of your own home. This seems like a wonderful resource for students—they’re able to find classmates online, send them a “friend request” and use them as an extra aid when it comes to their education. So, what if someone needs some homework help? It’s pretty simple really, they can just type a question and their classmate responds.

10 Things to do in college

Some of these I took from aggiew's list. I thought some of the ones on their list was applicable to college as a whole. Actually I feel like a few items on this list is applicable to life in general but college is a good place to start

1. Party-yes party your little hearts out, just don't die please. You're probably raising your eyebrows at this one, but it's important to learn your limits. You don't want to embarrass yourself at some important career event because your boss kept offering you wine and you didn't know when to stop. Just make sure you party with friends you can trust.

Technology: a double edged sword

This might be a bit incoherent since it's still a work in progress...I basically just put all my thoughts about technology down as coherently as possible

Back in elementary school the stereotypical image of nerd was someone with thick glasses, high waters, suspenders and a button up shirt. Fast forward to today and the stereotypical image of nerd is someone hunched over a computer. Technology has changed the way we perform daily tasks, but more importantly it has changed the way we look at the world.

Advice on how to use money

It's very very general advice that I think most people know but I still think its important nonetheless...

Finding a job in this economy is about as easy as finding a needle in a haystack. Nevertheless, it is possible. It’s crazy how much things change because of the economy. A few years ago, “Help wanted” and “Now hiring” signs were everywhere and now those signs are hard to come by. The only thing to do is to keep your eyes open and hope for the best.

What time is the next meeting?

It's Monday the 17th, at what time? Thanks.

Four Years, One Person, One Destiny

You will struggle for four years; you will survive four years. You will want to dial the operator and ask where your future is located. What are the cross streets? By which landmark can you find your mid-20s or 30s? But the operator will be unable to provide you with an answer. Instead, you will be told that the destination you are looking for is no longer in service, and if you hang up, dial again, you maybe able to receive an answer. Even that is not a guarantee.
