One of my most valuable college reads was Michael Lewis’s Liar’s Poker, his autobiography of his work as a trader at Salomon Brothers in the 1980’s. What I took away was primarily his famous statement that there is no self-indulgence in the economics major. Since the ‘80’s, many students who major in economics go on to more finance-related careers such as banking, which require little knowledge of economics whatsoever. Although there are a few students who genuinely enjoy economic theory, most feel that the courses are mundane and full of memorization.
